Situated at an altitude of 3,583 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas, the Kedarnath Temple is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India. However, the trek to the temple is physically demanding and requires careful preparation. Here is your complete guide to completing the Yatra safely.
1. Mandatory Biometric Registration
Every pilgrim must register online via the Uttarakhand Tourism Portal or offline at designated centers in Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Guptkashi. Without registration slips, you will not be allowed past Sonprayag.
2. Understanding the Trek Route
The trek starts from Gaurikund and is approximately 16 to 18 km long. It is a steep, continuous climb. While ponies, palkis, and helicopters are available, walking requires high cardiovascular stamina.
3. Health & High Altitude Acclimatization
Due to low oxygen levels, acute mountain sickness (AMS) is common. Drink plenty of water, walk slowly, carry portable oxygen canisters, and consult your doctor if you have high blood pressure or breathing issues.
